The Orville 3.02

Shadow Realms

Admiral Paul Christy joins the crew of the Orville and helps to negotiate an agreement with the Krill. The Orville is given access to parts of Krill space under the terms of the agreement.

Doctor Finn reveals to Kelly that she and Admiral Christy used to be married. They met when she was in university and he was one of her professors. They've been divorced for quite a long time but she still isn't comfortable having him around and doesn't want to rekindle anything with him.

The Orville starts to explore Krill space. They enter the Kalari Expanse of the Naklav Sector, an area that the Krill warned them against visiting. They find a giant space station that looks abandoned but still seems to be functioning. A team of six (Ed, Kelly, Claire, Paul, John, Talla) explore the space station.

The admiral gets infected with some kind of alien spore while aboard the space station but they don't find out it until after they return to the Orville. He starts to change. Claire promises to heal him but then he disappears. The power and control of all the ship's functions go down soon after that.

The crew of the Orville struggles to figure out how to regain control of the ship. They wander around in the dark for a while. They discover that the crew members that have been converted are susceptible to mild infections. They come up with a way to kill them but give them a chance to depart in peace.

Thoughts

This isn't a great episode but I enjoyed it considerably more than the previous one. It is basically a space horror story. I wasn't too surprised when the story went in that direction. They rushed into exploring Krill space way too quickly and they were warned not to explore the Kalari Expanse by the Krill. I suppose that there are other directions that the story could have gone.

Victor Garber returned for the seventh time as Admiral Halsey.

James Read played the part of Admiral Christy. I've seen a couple of movies in which he appeared and fairly recently I saw him in the final episode of Bosch Legacy, 3.13 Dig Down.

John Fleck played the part of the Krill ambassador. This was his second of three appearances on this show. His first appearance was in 2.10 The Blood of Patriots.
