Ballard 1.06

Beneath the Surface

Ballard and her team seem to have found trinkets from 14 victims in the storage unit. They are given 72 hours by Captain Berchem to make some progress. They work around the clock on the case. Some DNA from the evidence recovered leads them to a body in another case that dates back to 1997. The victim was Mike Garrison, the owner of the blue Van that was junked years ago.

Laffont keeps tabs on Driscoll's home. Ballard and Laffont tail Driscoll after he returns home and then leaves again. They see him meet with a uniformed police officer but they don't get close enough to identify the police officer or see the license plate of the vehicle that the uniformed cop was driving.

Parker confronts Olivas. He laughs in her face and tells her she's got nothing on him.

Ballard links one of the pieces of evidence recovered from the storage unit to a closed case from 2008.

Someone in the jail tells Driscoll that Javi met with a couple detectives. Javi gets beat up badly and falls into a coma. Driscoll comes after Ballard. He breaks into her home and starts to strangle her while she is sleeping. She wakes up and fights back. She crushes his windpipe. She tries to perform an emergency tracheotomy but he rips the tube out of his throat and suffocates.

Thoughts

Ballard has three dreams of her father. The first is at the beginning of the episode, before the 72 hour countdown begins. The second is while she and Laffont are surveilling Driscoll's home. The third is just before she wakes up to discover Driscoll strangling her.

Manny does not appear in this episode. I wonder what it means for him now that Driscoll is dead.

This was another tense episode. I don't believe that people can work around the clock for days on end, without sleep as portrayed in this episode. Staying up for 24 hours is difficult enough, let alone three days. There are limits to human endurance.

So, Driscoll is dead. Does that mean he wasn't the murderer? What now? I doubt that he would have talked but now Ballard and the others just have another dead end.
