Rick and Morty 1.11

Ricksy Business

Beth and Jerry take off for a romantic getaway on an overnight Titanic themed cruise. Rick and Summer throw a party. High school kids mix with aliens and robots at the party. Morty transports the house to another dimension accidentally. One of Rick's creations, Abradolph Linkler shows up at the party. One of Summer's friends leaves the party with one of Rick's friends.

This one had some good laughs but it is not close to being my favorite. There were lots of gags but not enough in the way of story to satisfy me.

Rick and Morty 1.10

Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind

Rick and Morty (of universe C-137) are arrested by the trans-dimensional Council of Ricks. They are put on trial for killing lots of other Ricks. They escape and go looking for the real killer who, of course another Rick. The Ricks for the most part look the same but some of them look slightly different.

This is for the most-part a Beth-less and Summer-less episode but Jerry gets a little spotlight. He becomes friends with doofus Rick who is picked on by all the other Ricks.

After Rick and Morty find killer Rick they get separated. It doesn't look good for Rick C-137 until his Morty leads an insurrection of Mortys. In the end killer Rick dies at the hands of a mob of Mortys but then it is revealed that the real mastermind behind killer Rick was his Morty.

A very fun episode that moves very fast. Loved the rick-diculous number of puns. Lots of good jokes and I love how it expands the multiverse in which this show exists.

Rick and Morty 1.09

Something Ricked This Way Comes

Morty and Jerry are abducted by aliens from Pluto who revere Jerry as a great man for stubbornly insisting that Pluto is a planet. Summer gets a job working for a mysterious antique store owner who just might be the Devil. Rick doesn't like Summer's new boss and does what he can to drive him out of business. Beth only makes a token appearance early in this episode.

Extremely funny. Love the Rick and Summer episodes like this one and 1.07 (Raising Gazorpazorp. Both stories have their share of laughs. Possibly my favorite episode this season. I love how absurd this show can get.

Rick and Morty 1.08

Rixty Minutes

Rick "fixes" the television so that the family now gets an infinite number of channels from an infinite number of realities. Jerry, Beth, and Summer get excited about seeing versions of reality where they are celebrities.

Funny but no where near close to my favorite episode. It felt a little too much like a joke stretched out longer than it should have lasted. I think I enjoyed it a little more than I did the first time I watched it, primarily because I knew that the finale wasn't going to satisfy me.

---

Continuity Corner: Morty tells Summer about the unmarked graves in the backyard, where he and Rick buried the versions of themselves who were killed in 1.06 (Rick Potion #9).

Rick and Morty 1.07

Raising Gazorpazorp

Morty fathers a half-alien child with a sex-doll from the planet Gazorpazorp. Rick and Summer travel to Gazorpazorp. There they find a society where men and women live separately. The men are extremely aggressive. The women are extremely petty. Both sexes have extra arms.

Morty tries to properly raise Morty, Jr., who grows up very quickly. He quickly learns that his son's first instincts are extremely violent and near impossible to correct. Rick and Summer get arrested once the women of Gazorpazorp discover that he is her grandfather.

Very fun and funny episode. I love the social commentary on men and women and raising children.

Rick and Morty 1.06

Rick Potion #9

Morty talks Rick into making a love potion for him that he can use on Jessica, the girl of his dreams. Morty takes it with him to the dance and uses the potion on Jessica. It works a little too well. Jessica is sick and spreads the effects of the potion to everyone else around the world. Everyone is clambering for Morty. They all love him and want him for themselves. The only ones unaffected are their family: Jerry, Beth, Summer.

Rick's attempts to fix the problem don't exactly work either as he turns everyone into giant praying mantises and then into monstrously ugly nightmarish version of themselves. Jerry gets jealous when Beth is called in to work late at night. He fights his way through hordes of giant praying mantises to reach the animal hospital just in time to save Beth from her co-worker. Rick ultimately solves the problem, kind of sort of.

Not my favorite episode but a very fun and surreal one. Rick is unable to save the day, for once. He has to resort to an underhanded trick to "set things right". He isn't unfamiliar with underhanded tricks but this was a new flavor that had not been seen before on the show. The ending was a game changer and gives the impression that this show is willing to go places that most shows would never go.

Rick and Morty 1.05

Meeseeks and Destroy

Morty gets to call the shots for once but things don't go exactly as he wants them to. The plan was for them to save a village in another universe by stealing some gold from a giant. Instead Morty and Rick almost get sent to prison for killing the giant. Before they can complete their mission things get a little darker.

Rick left Jerry, Beth, and Summer a magic box to help them get things done while he and Morty are off on their adventure. The box works for Beth and Summer but Jerry makes the mistake of asking for the impossible: he wants to take two strokes off his golf game. Mr. Meeseeks, the creature created when he presses the button, can't get Jerry to do what's needed to improve his golf game. Mr. Meeseeks flips out and creates more versions of himself. The situation quickly spirals out of control until Beth steps in and takes control.

Not my favorite or quite as laugh out loud funny as some of the earlier episode but this one was still fun to watch and worth my time.

Rick and Morty 1.04

M. Night Shaym-Aliens!

Rick and Morty find themselves trapped in a simulation created Zygerians, aliens who want the secret to creating dark matter fuel. Jerry is also trapped in the simulation. Rick and Morty escape from the simulation only to discover that they are still in it. Jerry, meanwhile. has what he thinks is the best day of his life and then starts feeling guilty about it.

Not perfect but very fun.

Rick and Morty 1.03

Anatomy Park

Rick sends Morty into the body of Reuben, a dying man, to try and help save him. Morty finds out that Rick has ulterior motives. He has built an amusement park with Reuben's body, Anatomy Park. The problem is that Reuben is old and his body is starting to break down. Before long Reuben dies. Morty has to escape the body before he gets killed.

In the world outside Reuben's body it's Christmas. Jerry's parents come to visit. They have a surprise for him. They have invited another man into their relationship, Jacob. This completely ruins the season for Jerry but leads to some very funny moments.

On the whole, not as much fun for me as the first two episodes even though there are some good jokes in this one. Not bad, just not as good as the previous two.

Rick and Morty 1.02

Lawnmower Dog

Rick has a plan to make Morty's life a little easier so that he has more time to help his grandfather. It involves leaping into the dreams of Morty's math teacher, Mr. Goldenfold. The plan is to convince him to give Morty and A but he proves to be very resistant to suggestion. They end up leaping into the dreams of someone in Goldenfold's dream and then when things don't work out there they leap again into the dreams of someone in the dreams of someone in the dreams of Goldenfold.

There they meet Scary Terry who kind of looks like Freddy Krueger from Nightmare on Elm Street. After he gets tired and goes to sleep, they leap into his dreams. In the end they work their way back out of the various layers of dreams, having accomplished their original mission plus a few others.

Meanwhile in the real world the family dog has achieved sentience and caged Morty's parents and sister. This is all thanks to a device that made Snuffles, Morty's dog, super intelligent. The device was created by Rick just before he and Morty started their dream diving adventure.

Love this episode. It is crazy silly. I'm glad to see that it holds up to repeat viewings.

Rick and Morty 1.01

Pilot

Rick Sanchez, brilliant, alcoholic scientist has recently moved in with his daughter Beth and her family. He needs some help in obtaining some plant specimens (giant seeds) and pulls Morty, his grandson, out of high school for the day to help him. Things don't work out exactly as planned. They end up having to try to smuggle the plant specimens through inter-dimensional customs.

I've watched this show before but I've decided to watch it again, at least this season, while I wait for season 3 to drop on Hulu. I wasn't keeping this blog or taking any notes at the time when I first watched it. I love this show. It is like Rick, irreverently brilliant. The humor doesn't always make me laugh out loud but I chuckled a lot as I rewatched this episode.
