Palm Springs (2020)

starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti
directed by Max Barbakow

Nyles is stuck at a wedding in Palm Springs. He's stuck in the sense that the day keeps repeating itself. Every day he wakes up and can't leave. He doesn't understand exactly how it happened but it has something to do with a cave near the site of the wedding.

One night, after the wedding, Nyles flirts with Sarah, the maid of honor. She's the bride's older sister. They leave the party and head out in to the desert. They are starting to get intimate when Roy (J. K. Simmons) shows up. He's trying to kill Nyles. He shoots him with arrows and then runs into the cave. Nyles is wounded but follows Roy into the cave.

Sarah is concerned about Nyles and follows him into the cave. Nyles tries to warn her not to but she does so anyway. She wakes up the next day but it is yesterday. She questions Nyles about what happened. He tells her what he knows about their situation. She makes a couple attempts to get out of it but eventually accepts that she is stuck just like him.

They have fun together for a while but they both have secrets. The secrets drive them apart. They come back together again but things have changed. She thinks she has found a way out but he doesn't want to leave.

Thoughts

J. K. Simmons was good but his role in the movie was limited. I thought Cristin Milioti looked familiar but the only other thing that I've seen her in was Fargo (Season 2) where she played Betsy Solverson. I thoughts she was a bit better than Andy Samberg. He seemed to play his character just for laughts whereas she seemed better rounded. Sometimes she was funny, sometimes she was serious.

I wasn't expecting to get sucked into this movie the way that I did. It isn't great but I like the premise and the way that it played out. The ending was kind of sappy but I wasn't terribly surprised by it. I do like the way the movie is structured. There were more than a few laughs.
