Superman has gone over the dark side and now works for Darkseid. He has been brainwashed by Granny Goodness and believes that Darkseid is his adoptive father. The brainwashing isn't complete. He still has occasional dreams about Earth, the planet that Darkseid wants him to conquer next.
Supergirl tries to fill in for Superman by using his robotic doubles. It proves to a little too much even for her. She is asleep in the Fortress of Solitude when one of the robots starts to malfunction. She flies to Metropolis to try and stop it from wrecking too much more havoc. It crashes into building after building. It doesn't stop until it crashes into the LexCorp building.
Luthor reveals that he suspected that this wasn't the real Superman. He's the one who caused it to malfunction. Supergirl denies that there is anything wrong and insists that Superman is just tired. Luthor lets her leave with the robot but then goes to see General Hardcastle. Luthor has been financing the general's operations, Project Achilles. He doesn't know what Superman is up to but he's ready for him.
Superman leads an invasion force from Apokolips. It attacks Earth and wipes out most of the Earth's defenses within minutes. Luthor doesn't understand why Superman is doing it but he senses an opportunity to do away with him once and for all. Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen are on the scene covering the story. Supergirl arrives and tries to stop her cousin. She gets in a couple good hits but Superman overwhelms her. He's getting ready to deliver the killing blow when Lois shows up.
Superman recognizes her from his dreams. He puts down Supergirl and listens to what she has to say. While he is distracted Luthor shows up with a gift for General Hardcastle, who was already on site. He has brought a Kryptonite heavy gun. A couple of Hardcastle's soldiers use it to shoot Superman.
Thoughts
I like where this episode goes. It is a real departure for this series. It also winds up being a launching point for a bunch of great stories (all related to Project Cadmus) in JLU.
