Better Call Saul 1.10

Marco

Jimmy says goodbye to Marco in 1992. He's getting ready to move to Albuquerque. Marco wants him to stay and hang out. He's very disappointed when he learns the Jimmy is going to work for Chuck. He doesn't understand. Jimmy can't be swayed. He says goodbye and leaves.

Jimmy goes to see Howard in 2002. He talks with Kim before he sees Howard. Jimmy gives Howard a list of all the things that Chuck will need. His shopping list, more or less. Jimmy and Howard seem to be on better terms. He even apologizes to Howard for calling him a pig-fucker.

Jimmy goes back to one of the nursing homes and calls numbers for bingo, like he has done before. He can't take his mind off of what has happened. He gets increasingly bitter as he calls numbers. He tells the Chicago sun roof story. The situation gets to be too much and he leaves before anyone wins.

Jimmy catches a flight to Chicago. He finds Marco in a bar that looks like the same bar in which he said goodbye to Marco before leaving for Albuquerque. Marco now has a job installing standpipes. He doesn't love it. Jimmy and Marco run a con together on some guy who isn't a regular at the bar. It feels good and for the next week they work together, running scams.

Marco doesn't want this to end. He wants Jimmy to stay but this is just a vacation for Jimmy. He explains to Marco that he's a lawyer now and he's got clients that need him. Marco is disappointed to learn that Jimmy isn't scamming his clients. Marco convinces Jimmy to do one more job with him before leaving.

Marco waits in the alleyway like he did in the scene at the beginning of 1.04. Jimmy brings the mark to him but Marco isn't awake. He had a heart attack and dies soon after Jimmy arrives on the scene. The mark runs off with the wallet that they left as bait.

Jimmy sticks around for the funeral. Kim calls him to tell him that HHM is partnering with Davis & Main, another law firm, on the Sandpiper Crossing case. Davis & Main are willing to hire him. She convinces him to come to the courthouse to meet the lead attorneys on the case from Davis & Main.

Jimmy returns to Albuquerque but he doesn't meet with the lawyers from Davis & Main. He has a change of heart as he is about to walk into the courthouse. He stops to see Mike at the toll booth on his way out. He talks to him about the money that he stole from the Kettlemans. Jimmy is angry at himself for not holding on to it. He wants to know why Mike didn't take the money and run.

Mike's explanation is that Jimmy hired him to do a job. That's why he didn't take the money. Jimmy swears that if he ever comes across that kind of money again he will not let it slip through his fingers. Jimmy hums Smoke on the Water as he drives away from the courthouse.

Thoughts

The Chicago sun roof story also played a part in episode 1.03. It's the event that got Jimmy arrested and almost thrown in prison. Chuck saved him from that which led to him moving to Albuquerque to work in the mail room at HHM.

I like this episode but I was a bit surprised by how it was focused. Two-thirds to three-quarters of it takes place in Chicago. Mike, Chuck, Kim, and Howard all make brief appearances but this episode is all Jimmy. He is the main character but usually he has more interaction with the others than he did in this episode.

Clearly this is a pivotal moment in Jimmy's life. His brother betrayed him and now one of his best friends has died. He's tired of doing things Chuck's way. He's ready to try a different approach and to use his powers to enrich himself.

This sort of season finale is not new to me. I've seen it before. The fireworks happen in the penultimate episode or at the beginning of the final episode of the season. The rest of the finale is then used to set things up for the next season.

I really liked this show. I can't see me not returning for at least one more season.
