Justice League 2.02.B

Tabula Rasa - Part 2

Superman proves to be no match for Amazo. Batman joins the fight. Amazo analyzes him and detects that he doesn't have any superpowers. Batman pulls out a piece of Kryptonite. Amazo inherited Superman's weaknesses as well as his powers. Batman forces him back until he dives off the roof into a river of sewage.

Mercy finds Lex at Professor Ivo's home. He is still working on his suit of armor. She's there to tell him about the visit she received from Batman and Superman. He gets the message and starts to pack up his armor.

J'onn continues to hide out in the woods. His experience last episode left him feeling that humanity is mostly hateful and selfish. J'onn hears some people approaching. It is a group of adults who are looking for a missing child. J'onn hides and lets them pass.

The rest of the League searches for Amazo in and around the river of sewage without finding any sign of him. Wonder Woman takes off to look for J'onn. Superman and Flash find Ivo's house but Lex is long gone. He left the place booby trapped. There is an explosion and they have to act fast to prevent the whole place from burning to the ground. They get some help from Green Lantern. Amazo shows up in time to see what's going on and that Luthor is gone.

Mercy helps Lex relocate to a lead-lined warehouse. She wants him to leave town as soon as possible. He's got other ideas. He's convinced that she still wants and needs him. Amazo finds the warehouse, thanks to his super-hearing, before Mercy has a chance to leave. Luthor is disappointed to find out the that Justice League aren't dead yet.

J'onn continues to observe the search party. He is moved by their plight and decides to help them.

Superman, Green Lantern, and the Flash comb through what's left of Ivo's house. They find Ivo's body and his blueprints for the android.

Amazo tells Luthor that he's no longer going to help him. Lex snaps at him but then he changes his approach and acts like he can handle it himself. He fakes heart pain but tells Amazo not to worry. The android changes him mind and pledges to find and destroy the Justice League. Lex reveals to Mercy, after Amazo leaves, that he has a trick up his sleeve. He has a device that Professor Ivo built which that will blow up the android's skull with the press of a button.

J'onn finds the lost girl and brings her back to the search party. They are overjoyed to see her and very thankful. J'onn sinks into the ground and takes off but Wonder Woman is there when he emerges not too far from where he left the group of people. She saw what he did and gives him a hug before they head back to town.

Hawkgirl locates Amazo. She follows him at a distance but he spots and attacks her. She gets knocked out but most of her teammates show up before he can kill her. Batman tries using Kryptonite on Amazo again but he has changed and it doesn't affect him. He grabs it from Batman and throws it at Superman. It shatters and covers him in Krptonite dust.

Flash fans the Kryptonie dust off Superman but then Amazo attacks him. Green Lantern rescues Flash and then Wonder Woman joins the fight. Amazo is too much for the three of them. He knocks them senseless, with some help from Luthor. The android is ready to destroy them when J'onn steps in.

J'onn allows Amazo to copy his powers. Using telepathy Amazo learns that Luthor has been lying to him. He leaves the Justice League alone and attacks Lex, who tries to flee. Amazo rips his armor to shreds. Luthor begs for his life. The android is disgusted by him. He looks to the sky. He transforms from gray to gold and takes off into the night sky.

Mercy gets a call from Lex the next day. He is in police custody. He needs her to get him some lawyers and doctors. She listens for about 30 seconds and then hangs up on him while he is still talking.

Thoughts

Which town does this story take place? I don't think is is ever named but I think it might be Metropolis. The landmark that makes me think Metropolis is the Lex Corp Building.

I don't understand why Amazo didn't copy Batman's utility belt. He copies Green Lantern's ring and Hawkgirl's mace. I suppose it worked better to have Batman stand out in that way.

The device Luthor obtained from Ivo's lab reminded me of the Ultimate Nullifier. Amazo's departure at the end of the episode made me think of how Dr. Manhattan left Earth in Watchmen.

Batman and Superman drop out of the fight at the end for no apparent reason. Superman was weakened by Kryptonite but Flash whisked it all away. The fight moves fast and I missed the fact that they dropped out of the fight on my first watch through. It wasn't until I watched it a second time, while I was starting to write about this episode, that I noticed their absence.

I love how Martian Manhunter clues Amazo in to what Luthor is really up to. It isn't just his gambit but also the way Carl Lumbly reads his lines. Luthor's reaction when he realizes that Amazo is on to him is also great.

I forgot how good this story is, especially the ending. It could be a backdoor pilot for Lex Luthor: The Animated Series. It's not going to happen but I can dream.
