The bad blood between Jimmy and Howard goes way back, back to when Jimmy passed the bar exam. He was working in the mail room of HHM at the time. He wanted to be hired as an attorney. Chuck said he would have to talk to the other partners. Howard came to talk to Jimmy while he was celebrating with the rest of the mailroom staff. The upshot of their conversation was that HHM was not going to hire him as an attorney.
Jimmy is visiting Mrs. Landry, one of his clients, at Sandpiper Crossing, an assisted living facility. He has prepared her will. She doesn't have enough money to pay him for his services. Something she says when she apologizes makes him ask some more questions. It becomes clear to him that Sandpiper Crossing is running a scam. They are charging the residents excessive amounts and hiding the fact that they are doing so with invoices that are very difficult to read.
Jimmy turns to Chuck for a second opinion. Chuck is reluctant to take up the case but he ultimately agrees to work with Jimmy on the case. Jimmy tries going back to Sandpiper Crossing to collect more evidence but they are already on to him. He can see that they are shredding documents. He quickly writes out a legal document accusing them of fraud.
Mike does some thinking after he sees Stacey and his granddaughter. They need more help than he can provide by working at the parking booth at the courthouse. He goes to see the vet who helped him out in 1.06 and suggested that he could help him find some work.
Jimmy goes through Sandpiper Crossing's trash and recycling bins, which are not locked, and recovers the remnants of the shredded documents. He reassembles them with a lot of help from Chuck. He gets Kim to help him by printing out some cases from Westlaw that Chuck says that they are going to need. They are contacted by Sandpiper Crossing's attorney and arrange for a meeting.
Chuck is very nervous. Jimmy does most of the talking for their side at the meeting. Richard Sweikart, Sandpiper's lead attorney, makes an offer of $100K to settle the case. Jimmy and Chuck explain to Sweikart that the evidence they have found proves that Sandpiper committed fraud across state lines, which makes it a RICO case. Chuck says they won't settle for less than $20 million.
Sweikart and the other Sandpiper attorneys leave the meeting. The matter is not resolved. Chuck asks Jimmy to get him something that is in his car. Jimmy is napping on the couch and is too tired to do it right away. Chuck, without thinking, goes outside and opens Jimmy's car. He grabs the stuff he wanted Jimmy to bring him. He is about to head back into the house when he realizes where he is and what he's doing.
Thoughts
It was good to see Chuck get back to work. I enjoyed the flashback that opened the episode. It is a good nugget of information.
This is a a good one. It is not a one-and-done. I'm pretty sure that they will come back to this case against Sandpiper in the next episode or two. It is also an important episode in that Chuck is finally starting to return to life although he is clearly not 100% just yet. I'm also curious to see where Mike's journey goes next. How does he become a thug? I know that Gus Fring is eventually going to enter the picture but I don't think that is going to happen for at least another season.
