UFO Robo Grendizer 1.21

Day of the Break of Dawn

The Vegans come up with a plan to melt the polar ice cap of the North Pole. They hope that this will cause great harm to the Earth and make it easier to conquer. Blaki is put in charge of dealing with Grendizer.

Danbei is trying to contact aliens, once again, when Taro, one of the horses, gets very sick. They need penicillin. Daisuke rushes to the city to get the medicine. He is on his way back with the medicine when his vehicle crashes because of an avalanche. The vial containing the penicillin is broken. Daisuke is ready to head back to the city for more but then he gets a call from Dr. Umon.

The Vegans have put their plan into action. They have destroyed the United Nations monitoring station near the North Pole. Dr. Umon isn't sure that it is the Vegans. He has sent Kouji in the TFO to investigate but he knows that if it is the Vegans then Kouji will need help. He will need Duke Fleed and Grendizer.

Daisuke is heartbroken over not being able to bring the medicine to Taro. It may die but he does what Dr. Umon asks.

Kouji arrives at the North Pole only to discover that much of the ice has been melted. He spots the Vegan space ships and approaches them. Blaki launches minifos to deal with Kouji but he destroys them with rockets. He fares worse against the saucer beast that attacks him. It shoots him down. He crash lands on a sheet of ice.

Duke Fleed flies as fast as possible (mach 9) in Grendizer. He arrives at the North Pole just as Blaki in the saucer beast is about to destroy the TFO. Grendizer destorys the minifos that attack him and then tries to destroy the Vegan ship that is melting the ice. His beams bounce off the ice melting ship.

Blaki attacks in the saucer beast. It looks for a few moments like Grendizer isn't able to do any damage to him but then he starts to land some blows. Grendizer is too much for the saucer beast. Blaki escapes once again but the saucer beast is destroyed. Grendizer blows up the ice melting Vegan ship by striking it from a different direction and then heads back to the ranch.

Daisuke makes it back to the ranch in time, with a new dose of penicillin. Taro is saved.

Thoughts

The French title for this episode is Les Continents submergĂ©s which translates as The Submerged Continents. The English title for this episode, that I found on Wikipedia, is Decisive Battle! The Shining Aurora. I think I prefer the one on the DVD over either of the other two translations but none of them is great or captures the essence of the episode.

Once again there is emphasis on how Daisuke is lonely. This time he overcomes it by taking care of horses most notably Taro.

Blaki pilots a saucer beast for the second time in as many episodes. He isn't any more successful than he was last time. This saucer beast looked a bit like a flying submarine before it transformed.

This wasn't a remarkably good episode but I've seen lots that I have disliked more. It was focused and I liked that. This makes at least the third time that the Vegans have attempted to wreck havoc by using science. The other two that come to mind are the solar and lunar eclipse episodes.
