Superman: The Animated Series 4.03

Legacy - Part 2

Superman regains his memories just as he is getting locked up by General Hardcastle in a super secret military base in the mountains. They also take away Supergirl and lock her up too. Luthor makes sure that Hardcastle has all he needs to keep Superman and Supergirl under control. They lock them up in cells that are lit by red sun lamps. Superman insists that it is all a mistake. Darkseid made him do it.

Hardcastle doesn't care. He prepares a military tribunal to judge Superman for betraying the Earth. The judges that make up the tribunal are just as tough on Superman as Hardcastle.

Help is on the way in the form of Lois Lane. She sneaks on to the base thanks to some credentials that she got from her father, who is also a general. She sneaks around and finds Superman just as Hardcastle and Luthor are getting ready to kill him with a syringe filled with liquid Green Kryptonite. She uses a taser on them when they have their backs turned to her.

Superman and Lois escape. They find Supergirl and take her with them on the way out. They make their way back to STAR Labs in Metropolis. Supergirl is still in really bad shape. Superman turns to Dr. Emil Hamilton for help. Hamilton is reluctant to help because he is worried about being branded a traitor like Superman. The Man of Steel gets angry and grabs him by the neck, which frightens Hamilton. Lois convinces Superman that Dr. Hamilton is not the enemy.

Superman breaks into a safe at STAR Labs and retrieves a mother box. He uses it to open a Boom Tube to Apokalypse. He beats up Granny Goodness, Kalibak. and Darkseid before Supergirl arrives and talks him into returning to Earth with her.

Thoughts

I knew that this one got dark, but I forgot exactly how dark it got. I like this episode better than the previous one but this one probably wouldn't be as good as it is without the previous one which set things up nicely. I like the way that colors were used in the scenes that take place in the miliary base. The colors are much duller and more muted.

This is an essential two-part story to watch in conjunction with the Justice League and JLU series. It sets at least a couple things up that are followed up on, especially in the JLU Project Cadmus story.

I had my doubts as to whether this would live up to my memories of it, but it did. As much as I like Batman: The Animated Series I don't think it has any stories that tie as directly into JL/JLU as Superman: The Animated Series does.
