Dear White People 2.07

Chapter VII

Troy goes on a quest to figure out who he is. He has spent his life trying to please his father, until he got arrested. Since then he has been wandering a bit, without purpose. He tries stand up comedy at the beginning of this episode without much success. He asks Kurt about his performance on stage. Kurt turns around and asks him about his inner self, his comedy self.

Troy doesn't know how to respond. Kurt recommends they take a trip together, a trip fueled by shrooms. Troy is game. He feels nothing at first but then he does. He wanders around campus. He has flashbacks to freshman year. He talks to Sam, Reggie, Lionel, Coco, Joelle, and Sorbet along the way. He starts to see himself as others see him. He ends the night by bathing naked in the fountain.

Troy wakes up the next morning in his room. His father is standing over him. He starts to tear Troy a new one but Troy tells him that he's had enough. All Dean Fairbanks does is tell him what to do. He never listens to him. That hurts now more than ever after he heard about how he helped Reggie when he was feeling low.

Thoughts

This is a decent episode. It all about character: Troy's character. Hopefully they will build on this in someway in the final three episodes of the season. I'm not expecting a lot because there are a number of other things for them to follow up on too.
