Dear White People 2.10

Chapter X

Rikki Carter is coming to Winchester. Her imminent arrival is causing quite a stir. CORE, under Coco's leadership, is planning to do something about it. She cuts a deal with the devil, Kurt, to help CORE achieve their goal.

Sam and Lionel compare notes about the secret societies of Winchester. They both found marks on their doors which they believe are summons to join one of the secret societies if they can just figure out where it meets.

Troy shows Kurt his samples. He wants to write for Pastiche. Kurt tells him that he's going need to to see a lot more before he will consider hiring him.

Sam turns to Gabe for emotional support. They wind up in bed together. His place, not hers. Lionel winds up in bed with Wesley. It's good at first but some of Wesley's offhand comments wound Lionel

The cop who pulled a gun on Reggie gets fired by Dean Fairbanks. The cop doesn't care. He's got a job lined up with the state police.

Al and his friends are determined to get the security camera footage that shows who started the fire in Davis Hall.

Reggie and Joelle go back to her room. There is some tension between them but they manage to get beyond that. Sam walks in and catches them not quite in the act but without their clothes.

Sam confronts Rikki Carter before she goes on stage. Sam is ready to unload on her but gets disarmed by Rikki's smooth talk and her advice. Rikki seems to think that they have a lot in common. Sam is repulsed by that notion.

Rikki was brought in by the Republican club to talk to what she expected would be a mostly White audience. She is introduced by Silvio who is equally surprised to discover that the audience is mostly Black.

Sam and Lionel figure where the secret society meets. They break into the room but there is no one there, until the clock chimes 12. Just one person shows up, an older man.

Mid ending credits these is one more scene. Al and friends have found the footage. They sit down to watch it only to discover that it looks like it the fire was an accident. It was Clifford's incompetence that caused it. Al is very disappointed.

Thoughts

This episode felt overloaded. There was just a bit too much in it. I think I would have preferred if it was shorter, it was 35 minutes long, and more focused. I didn't have high hopes for it going in because there was so much in the mix up to this point without feeling like the season had a focus.

The most interesting part was the scene with Rikki Carter. She is played by Tessa Thompson who played Sam White in the Dear White People movie. I've never seen the movie but this scene felt very weird just knowing that.

Giancarlo Esposito? He's been the voice of the narrator at the beginning of each and every episode but I didn't expect to see him make an appearance. That was an interesting twist but where, if anywhere, does this thread go from here?

This end to the season doesn't exactly leave me wanting more. If I watch the third and final season then it will be with the hope that the next season is a little more focused or brings something else that pulls me in.
