The Vegans launch yet another plan to wreck havoc on Earth. This time they use the combination of gravity devices and a total lunar eclipse to their advantage. Twenty-four gravity devices are built on the moon. Twenty-four more devices are built on Earth, inside Mt. Kirifoki. Their plan is to use the devices to pull the moon significantly closer to the Earth during a total lunar eclipse. Their presence in the vicinity of the Japanese mountain went undetected until some mountain climbers saw their big spaceship and took a picture of it.
The picture of the Vegan spaceship makes it into the newspaper and is seen by Daisuke. He immediately suspects that the Vegans are (as usual) up to no good. He consults with Professor Umon and learns that Kouji is already in the TFO near Mt. Kirifoki, investigating on behalf of Professor Umon. Daisuke and Professor Umon standby and wait for the report from Kouji.
Duke Fleed and Grendizer leap into action once Kouji reports back on the Vegans activities. They are hot on his tail as he flees their facility inside Mt. Kirifoki. Duke Fleed uses the full power of Grendizer to travel mach 9 and arrive in time to save Kouji.
Blaki, who is personally in charge of this mission, lauches all the Vegan forces in the area at Grendizer. He also has a couple minifos go after Kouji. The TFO has crashed so Kouji is literally running for his life. Blaki personally takes control of a saucer beast and engages Grendizer in hand-to-hand combat. Grendizer gets the upper hand and is about to destroy the saucer beast when Blaki points out that Kouji has been captured and will be killed if Grendizer doesn't back off.
Duke Fleed is torn but ultimately decides to surrender rather than let Kouji get killed. Duke Fleed and Kouji are about to get executed when Duke Fleed leaps into action and frees them both. He jumps into Grendizer as Kouji escapes. He fights and destroys the saucer beast, although Blaki escapes to fight another day.
Grendizer then destroys the gravity machines in Mt. Kirifoki just before the total lunar eclipse begins thus saving the day and the Earth.
Thoughts
This is the second time that the Vegans have used an eclipse to try and take over the Earth. The previous time was in 1.11. In that episode it was a solar eclipse rather than a lunar one.
Blaki personally takes part in the fight against Grendizer for the first time. I don't recall him ever piloting a saucer beast before. There haven't been many saucer beast pilots who have been identified in previous episodes.
Danbei, Hikaru, and Goro also show up briefly in this episode.

Overall I would say this episode is a decent one. That isn't saying a lot. I appreciate the use of a plot that at least seems based in science and doesn't revolve around another lonely kid getting tricked by the Vegans.
