Freaks and Geeks 1.01

Pilot

Sam Weir is getting bullied Alan, by one of his classmates, when Lindsey. Sam's sister, steps in to break it up. Alan backs off. Neal and Bill, Sam's friends who are geeks like him, were there but they didn't step in to help him. The next day the same things happens at lunch in the school cafeteria. This time Sam calls on one of the teachers to help him. The teacher does but he gives Sam a hard time, after Alan walks off, for not standing up for himself.

Sam and Lindsey's parents want to know if they have dates for the dance. Lindsey doesn't want to go but her father says if she doesn't then she'll have to work with him at the store that night. The next day she approaches Daniel, one of the freaks. He invites her to hang out with him and his friends during lunch. She asks about the dance but they aren't going. Millie, one of Lindsey's geeky friends, shows up. She wants to know why Lindsey hasn't signed up for the Academic Decathlon.

Cindy, one of Sam's classmates, brings him his jacket which he left in class. Sam has a crush on Cindy. She's a cheerleader. Neal and Bill tell him that Cindy must be in love with him. He wants to ask her to the dance.

Lindsey meets Kim, one of Daniel's friends. She gets angry when she sees Lindsey hanging out with the freaks. She calls Lindsey a poseur and then dumps Lindsey's purse.

Lindsey sticks up for Eli, another of her classmates whom everyone picks on. She winds up asking him to the dance, but not because she wants to. He says yes but then later, when she tries sticking up for him again, he goes off on her and then trips and falls off the bleachers, breaking his arm.

Sam winds up having to play dodgeball in gym class. It winds up being the big guys versus the geeks. Alan is on the other team. Things don't work out in Alan's favor but Sam doesn't come out on top either.

Sam gets bullied by Kim. Lindsey skips class with Nick. He shows her his drum kit. He suggests that he could pretend to take to the dance. Mr. Rosso shows up and busts them. He wants Lindsey to join the Academic Decathlon team. She still isn't interested.

Lindsey's father gives her a hard time that night for cutting class. Sam asks her for some advice after dinner. The next day he asks Cindy to the dance. He was on his way out the door to meet with his friends. They were going to fight Alan. Neal and Bill wind up fighting him without Sam. The fight is over and Alan is gone by the time Sam shows up. They held their own.

Cindy already has a date for the dance but she promises to dance with Sam if he shows up. Mr. Rosso makes Lindsey work the refreshments table at the dance with Millie. Sam gets his dance with Cindy. Lindsey dances with Eli.

Thoughts

There are a lot of familiar faces on this show, some of them are regular cast members. The gym teacher was played by Tom Wilson who played Biff in the Back to the Future movies.

I really love the vibe of this show. It is a nice mix of humor and drama. There are so many little moments that work. I love the facial expressions in this show. They say so much.

It's been a number of years since I watched this series. I didn't see it when it first aired. I watched it on Netflix back in 2012. I was very impressed with it the first time around. I really enjoyed watching this episode again.
