Norio Kunato and Mozuku enter the forbidden area beneath his family's ancestral home. They find Ochiai's lab and they are quickly overpowered by deadly plants. Norio and Mozuku recover but they are no longer themselves. Norio is now Ochiai. They go to the Extraterrestrial Research Division and overpower Numi Tahiro, the scientist who is there keeping an eye on the ena that looks like Hoshijiro. Tahiro's brain is taken over by one of the creatures that Ochiai bred, a Blood Nematode.
Tanikaze learns about the disappearance of the ena that looks like Shizuka. He is down in the dumps. Shinatose doesn't know why he feels sad but tries to cheer him up. They plan a trip to a shrine but then he gets a call from Yuhata. He agrees to meet with Yuhata. Izana decides to go to the shrine by herself. He catches up to her after talking to Yuhata, who tells him the something that Numi told him, not to think about the ena and it was just an ena.
Tanikze gets the message one more time. This time it comes from Kunato/Ochiai. Tanikaze is passing him on an escalator. Norio is headed up and Tanikaze is headed down at the time. Kunato wishes Tanikaze well but tells him to forget about the ena.
Gauna 549 sneaks up on Sidonia. It is as big as the gauna cluster they faced at the end of Season 1 but it is a single gauna. Eight garde pilots, led by Samari, head out to deal with it. Nagate joins them in the Tsugumori. They quickly discover that Gauna 549 heals much faster than the others. They can't get a shot at its ena. Suddenly they are joined by another alien, Tsumugi Shirai but her exact nature leaves everyone puzzled.
Thoughts
I'm not crazy about the new opening and closing music selections. I liked the opens used in Season 1.
Knights of Sidonia is no longer on Netflix. I'm just finding that out although apparently it was pulled at the beginning of 2021. I bought the DVDs of both seasons at another time when the show was not available on Netflix. They brought the show back and I felt dumb for buying the DVD sets. I'm feeling a little smarter right now.
There's a lot going on in this episode, as usual. I'm curious to see where it is all going. Will there be more explorations of the past or will this season be primarily rooted in the present. Yuhata seems to have decided to step aside and not force herself on Tanikaze, at least for now. I'm sure that makes Shinatose quite happy.
What happened to the ena that looks like Hoshijiro? Who and what are Tsumugi Shirai and what does she want? She introduced herself to the garde pilots. Does that mean that she's there to help them?
