Freaks and Geeks 1.07

Carded and Discarded

Lindsey gets $300 from her aunt and uncle on her birthday. Her parents want her to add it to her college fund but she has other ideas. She wants to use it to buy herself and her friends fake IDs.

Sam, Bill, and Neal make friends with Maureen. She's new to the area and in their biology class. She doesn't know anyone in school and hangs out with them for a while. They are all attracted to Maureen.

Lindsey and Sam's father finds an old board game that he used to play as a kid. He wants to play it with them but they aren't interested.

Daniel takes Lindsey, Ken, and Nick to see Howie. He works at the mall and sells fakes IDs on the side. Howie gets them the IDs but they don't look anything like them. They wind up getting fake IDs from Toby, Millie's cousin.

Maureen starts to make friends with some of the more popular kids. Sam and his friends get worried about the chances that she will continue to hang out with them.

Lindsey and her friends go to see a band at a bar. Mr. Rosso, the guidance counselor, turns out to be the lead singer for the band.

Thoughts

There are three Billy Joel songs played in this episode: You Were the One, Rosalinda's Eyes, Don't Ask Me Why. Rosalinda's Eyes is from 52nd Street. The other two songs are from Glass Houses. All three songs accompany scenes involving Maureen, Sam, Bill, and Neal.

Howie is played by Jason Schwartzman. This is, according to IMDb, just his second screen credit, after Rushmore.

This is the first of three episodes that Maureen is in. I don't recall how big of a role she has in the other two episodes.

I kind of feel like I should have seen it coming that Mr. Rosso would show up at the bar. He was in a few other scenes in episode up to that point. He even played guitar in one of them.

This one took a little while to develop but I like how it turned out. I, as usual, felt more akin to the geeks than the freaks.
