Doctor Who (1963) 7.04.03

Inferno - Part 3

The Doctor, the TARDIS console, and Betsy disappear as Liz Shaw and the Brigadier watch helplessly. The power has been cut to the hut where they are standing. They rush back to the drilling operation. Liz, the Brigadier, and Sir Keith Gold try to get Professor Shahlman to listen to reason but he refuses. He is happy to hear that the Doctor has disappeared.

The Doctor wakes up next to the TARDIS console. Something is wrong. His sonic screwdriver doesn't open the doors to the hut. He opens them manually and exits with Betsy. He is shot at by a soldier. He runs and is soon being pursued by several soldier of what he later learns are the Republican Security Forces (RSF). He is eventually caught when he tries approaching a soldier who looks like Liz Shaw. Her hair is a different color than Liz has, she isn't a scientist, and her name is Section Leader Elizabeth Shaw.

The Doctor is taken in by Shaw with some help from another familiar face with a new name: Platoon Under Leader Benton. They take him to Brigade Leader Lethbridge-Stewart. It takes the Doctor a few more minutes but he finally catches on to the fact that he is in a parallel universe. He asks to see Professor Stahlman. The Brigade Leader decide to humor him, but only because has no plan to let the Doctor leave the facility alive.

Director Stahlman is just as impatient in this universe as he was in the one that the Doctor came from. He insists that the project must continue to move forward despite the warning signs that something is going terribly wrong.

Brigade Leader Lethbridge-Stewart leaves the Doctor guarded by Platoon Under Leader Benton. The Doctor escapes but Benton catches up to him just as the situation with the drilling rig seems to be getting worse.

Thoughts

Professor Stahlman and Director Stahlman may not express any doubts about the drilling project but they have both been infected by the green slimes that is oozing out of the drilling rig. It shouldn't be too much longer before they become murderous lunatics like Slocum.

Everything is just a little different in the alternate universe. Brigade Leader Lethbridge-Stewart has a scar and in eye-patch. Director Stahlman does not have a mustache and beard. Petra is a scientist. Liz is not a scientist. The royal family was executed years ago.

The story still feels a little bit padded. The chase scene lasted a little longer than seemed necessary.
