Better Call Saul 2.05

Rebecca

Past. Chuck and Rebecca, his wife, are getting ready for a dinner guest, Jimmy. Chuck isn't so sure about it. Jimmy arrives and charms Rebecca with jokes about lawyers. He learned the jokes in the mail room at Hamlin Hamlin McGill, where he just started working the week before. Chuck doesn't care for the jokes. He tries desperately to give his wife the secret signal but she is laughing too hard at Jimmy's jokes to notice.

Present. Jimmy is working late at night at Davis and Main. He thinks he's alone but Erin, one of his colleagues, shows up out of nowhere. She has edited one of his briefs and wants to go over her suggestions. She is junior to him. Jimmy doesn't want to take her seriously so when she isn't looking he slips out of the office.

Jimmy does to HHM's office to see Kim, that same night. She is also working late. She has been ignoring his phone calls. He has an idea. He wants her to sue HHM. She refuses. She doesn't want Jimmy's help. She wants to get herself out of the mess into which she has gotten herself.

Kim starts making phone calls the next day, trying to drum up business for HHM. The first round of phone calls gets her nowhere.

Mike talks to Stacy who is very happy with the new place he has found them. It has a pool. His face is still bruised from his encounter with Tuco. Stacy knows his face is bruised but he told her it happened during a traffic accident. He doesn't want Kaylee to see him that way so he has been staying away.

Jimmy and Erin go to the Albuquerque courthouse to make an appointment to see a judge. Jimmy tries bribing the employee who makes the appointments with a Beanie Baby. Erin flips out and points out that what Jimmy is attempting is bribery. Jimmy tries arguing with her but ultimately relents and throws the Beanie Baby in the trash.

Jimmy runs into an old colleague in the men's room at the courthouse. The colleague is jealous of Jimmy when he finds out that he is working at Davis and Main.

Kim continues to make calls in the hopes of landing a client and finally gets a bite, Mesa Verde Bank & Trust. She arranges a meeting with herself and Howard. The meeting goes well Howard wants her to continue to work in doc review. Howard goes to see Chuck to tell him the good new about Mesa Verde. He's honest with him. He tells him that it was Kim that brought the work in but he isn't ready to take it easy on her.

Chuck goes in early the next morning. He runs into Kim. They have a chat. He tells her about what Jimmy was like when they were younger. He tells him about how Jimmy caused their father to have to sell his business. He plays good cop to Howard's bad cop. He promises to have a talk with Howard and try to get her out of doc review.

Mike gets a visit while he is eating breakfast at a diner. The visitor is Hector Salamanca, Tuco's uncle. Hector acknowledges that Tuco was too hard on Mike but he doesn't want his nephew to be locked up forever. He asks Mike to tell the police that the gun was his. Tuco will still have to serve time but it will be years instead of decades. Mike is reluctant. Hector offers Mike $5K to do it and asks him to think about it.

Thoughts

I don't believe it. I commented after the last episode about how Kim needed to be more than Jimmy's love interest and in this episode she was. It was, for the most part her episode. I wasn't sure it would ever happen and I sure didn't think it would happen in the next episode.

The montage of scenes of Kim making phone calls is accompanied by A Mi Manera (My Way) performed by the Gipsy Kings.

Chuck isn't being totally honest with Kim. I think he embellished some aspects of the story he told her. I'm guessing that at some point Kim will mention it to Jimmy and he will give her his version of the story.

I'm not sure why the episode was called Rebecca. She was in the opening scene but as far as I call tell that was it. There were no call backs to the opening scene. There is also no explanation of what happened to Rebecca. Did she leave him? Did she die?

I really liked this episode. It did it for me. I liked Kim's starring role. I hope there will be more Kim focused episodes down the line. I liked Mike's part in this episode, especially that final scene with Hector Salamanca. This might be my favorite episode of the season.
