Captain Harlock (1978) 1.11

When Lola Shines Golden

The Arcadia heads for Venus. The crew spot a Mazone command ship that has been seriously damaged by meteors. Caprain Harlock sends Daiba and Yattaran over to investigate. They find one Mazone left alive, Lola. She is the pilot who almost killed Tadashi in the previous episode. He wants to kill her but Captain Harlock orders them to bring her back to the Arcadia, alive.

They expect that Lola will self-destruct like other Mazone have done but she doesn't. Captain Harlock leaves Tadashi in charge of guarding the prisoner. He tried interrogating her but she won't speak. She hypnotizes him and makes him believe that she is his mother. His real mother has been dead for a number of years. Lola claims that it was all part of her plan and that she was in hiding.

Captain Harlock and Kei are warned by Doctor Zero that Tadashi is young and impressionable. The Mazone may not be human but they look like beautiful women. Captain Harlock chooses to do nothing about it. Kei checks up on Tadashi but doesn't try to keep him from visiting Lola.

Lola continues to use her power to keep Tadashi under her sway. She persuades him, once they get close to Venus, to take her down to the planet. He drops her off and then returns to the Arcadia. It isn't until he gets back that he discovers how he was fooled and what he did.

Thoughts

I can't say that this is a terribly memorable episode. Captain Harlock seems more concerned that Tadashi learn from his mistakes than avoid mistakes altogether. This seems to be a running theme in this show. I wonder if it will get beyond these sorts of stories. I hope it does.
