Better Call Saul 2.09

Nailed

Mike uses the hose with the nails sticking out of them to stop the Regalo Helado truck 60 miles south of Albuquerque. He hog ties the driver but doesn't kill him. The driver doesn't get a look at him. Mike finds money in the tires. He takes it and leaves the driver tied up on the side of the road.

Chuck and Howard go to the hearing with the New Mexico licensing board for Mesa Verde. Chuck is under a great strain with all the electrical devices in the building. There is a problem with the filing. Chuck tries to talk the licensing board into granting a provisional permit. They won't. It will be six weeks before the licensing board will have time to meet with Mesa Verde again. Chuck is positive that Jimmy pulled a fast one on him.

Jimmy and Kim are working on renovating their new offices when she gets a call from Paige at Mesa Verde. They have decided to dump HHM and hire her to represent them. She gets a call from HHM a few minutes later to let her know that the Mesa Verde paperwork is available for her to pick up. Jimmy offers to tag along. She says okay.

They arrive at Chuck's house. Jimmy's key no longer works, the locks have been changed. Chuck accuses Jimmy of forging documents while he was sick and then replacing them. Jimmy denies it. Kim asks Chuck if he has any proof. His only proof is his knowledge of his brother's personality and abilities. Kim suggests that Chuck just made a mistake.

Jimmy and his camera crew sneak onto a school playground to shoot a commercial. They get some flack from the principal but Jimmy works his magic. They manage to get the shot without the principal's permission when she isn't looking.

Mike spies on Hector Salamanca and sees he is not happy. He checks the newspapers but there is no mention of the truck he robbed. Nacho meets with Mike. He suspects that Mike was behind it because the driver wasn't killed. He tells Mike about how an innocent person was killed because of the robbery. Nacho is very nervous. He almost pulls a gun on Mike but Mike convinces him not to do it.

Kim says something to Jimmy that gets him nervous about what Chuck might do next. Jimmy goes back to the copy center where he doctored the documents. Ernesto is there asking questions. Jimmy waits until Ernie leaves and then goes to talk to the clerk. He pays him to change his story and scramble the security camera footage.

Jimmy leaves and waits across the street, in the shadows, until Ernesto returns with Chuck. The clerk tells Chuck that he's not sure if it was Jimmy. Chuck tries to intimidate him but Jimmy has prepared the clerk who sticks to his version of the truth. Check feels sick from all the electrical devices in the copy center. He falls and hits his head. Jimmy stands across the street and watches helplessly.

Thoughts

Mike seems to have some real regrets about what he did once he hears that an innocent person was killed. I think the lesson that he is going to take from this is that he didn't go far enough. He wanted the police to find out about the Salamanca operation but they didn't. The Salamancas got lucky. Mike has got to be feeling guilty or at least culpable in the death of the innocent person.

Jimmy can't be and doesn't seem happy about what happened to Chuck. It is partly his fault but it is also Chuck's personality that is to blame for this. Jimmy isn't innocent but Chuck is a control freak, like his brother. If he wasn't so insistent then he wouldn't have put himself in this situation. The fact of the matter is that neither brother can let the other win. They keep fighting with everything they've got. It is this that pushed them apart and keeps the fight alive.

I'm not sure where things go from here. Kim knows that Chuck is right about Jimmy. She's on Jimmy's side for now but how long will that last?

Will Chuck survive his injury? Will he recover? Maybe he will recover and no longer be afflicted by the condition that made him feel sick when near electrical devices. How will Jimmy feel about what happened to Chuck. He wants to win but he doesn't want to kill Chuck.

What's Mike's next move? I think he is going to double down but I'm not sure where that is going to lead him or what the outcome will be. Well, I'm not sure where things will be at the end of this season, at the end of the next episode but I know that eventually he will wind up working for Gus.

This was a really good episode. I really liked it. It was tense. Almost every scene seemed important.
