The Phil Silvers Show 1.30

The Recruiting Sergeant

Bilko gets a hot tip about a 40-to-1 odds on a horse. He needs to get to town to place the bet. His only way off base is to go with Colonel Hall on a recruiting trip to the county fair in Topeka. He has some trouble locating the bookie with whom to place the bet. Colonel Hall saddles him with some recruits. He takes the recruits with him when he goes to see the bookie. One of the recruits almost blows it for him when he leads some policemen to the bookie's secret office.

Thoughts

Most of Bilko's platoon does not appear in this episode. Doberman is the only one of the privates who makes an appearance.

This was a lot of fun. It was kind of over the top but I enjoyed it. I loved watching Bilko work in so many ways to reach the bookie, hide his scheming from Colonel Hall, scare off recruits, lead recruits, etc. I especially liked the convoluted trip to the bookie's secret office.

Notes

Len Wayland plays the part of Bill Kerpanski, the guy who gives Bilko the hot tip. This is the only episode of The Phil Silvers Show he was in but he also showed up in an episode of The Invaders (1.13).

Tony Galento, a former boxer, plays the part of Little Pete. He only has 5 screen credits but two of his other credits are for roles in On the Waterfront and Guys and Dolls.

Paul Lipson played the part of Lonesome Sam. He was in several other episodes of the The Phil Silvers Show. This is the fifth episode in which he appeared. He usually played either Pvt. Tony or Patsy the Bookie.

Vincent Gardenia had an uncredited, non-speaking role in this episode as a bookie. It was his only appearance on The Phil Silvers Show.
