Bruised (2020)

starring Halle Berry, Adan Canto, Sheila Atim
directed by Halle Berry

Jackie Justice (Halle Berry) a one time top notch MMA fighter from Newark, NJ gets an offer from Immaculate, a fight promoter. Manny, Jackie's 6-year-old son, who had been living with his father comes to live with her after his father is killed. Manny doesn't talk and doesn't know his mother. Desi (Adan Canto), Jackie's boyfriend, isn't understanding. She puts up with his anger for a time but when it gets to be too much she takes Manny and leaves.

Jackie tries moving in with Angel, her mother, who was negligent when Jackie was little. That works but only for the moment. Jackie, meanwhile has a full schedule training with Buddhakan (Sheila Atim), who is trying to get her ready for a title bout.

Thoughts

This is the directorial debut of Halle Berry. She looks in this movie completely different that she has in other movies that I have seen. She is not the pretty face. She is the star at the center of the movie.

This movie is far from perfect but it impressed me in places. The actor who plays Jackie's son does an incredible amount of emoting with his face. Some of the musical choices seemed really helped to set the mood.

Did this movie need to be as long as it is? Possibly not, but it didn't feel like it dragged at all.

The title fight at the end of the movie was good to excellent. I thought it was beautifully shot.

I can see how this movie might not work for everyone. It took me a little while to get into it. There were scenes that felt a little forced. What worked the best for me was the human drama of Jackie learning to do what she had to do to take care of her son.
