Black Mirror 1.01

The National Anthem

A princess of the British royal family is kidnapped. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is given a choice, have sex with a pig on live television or the princess will be killed.

He tries to get the princess back without doing the livestream but in the end the PM goes through with the demand of the kidnapper. The princess is returned. The PM's ratings soar but his marriage suffers.

Thoughts

This episode is beyond bizarre. I tried watching it once, years ago, and gave up after 10 minutes. This time I stuck with it. I probably should have just skipped it. I was expecting some sort of a twist ending but I don't feel as if there was one.

What I get from this episode is a statement by the creators about politicians. They seem to be saying that politicians will do anything to preserve their reputations and their careers. That's about all I got from this episode. If there's another deeper meaning then I didn't see it.

I wasn't terribly moved by it. It was a little too surreal to take seriously. It left me feeling cold although I got the feeling that in the end the creators wanted the audience to feel something for the PM. I didn't but that's because the whole thing was like some sort of a ridiculous story that someone made up to make a point. It was too out there for me to get invested in the story or do more than watch it unfold.

I'm going to try watching the other two episodes in this short season but my expectations are not very high after this one.
