Un Village Français 5.04

La Répétition
or Training

25 Oct 1943

Antoine and his friends are still in the woods. Antoine makes them train, rain or shine, even though they don't have any weapons. They scrounge for food. Claude, Antoine's friend who studied acting, suggests that they put on a play in the hopes that it will raise spirits. Antoine is aginst it but many of the others are in favor of it.

Chassagne pushes Marchetti to make some progress on finding Antoine and his guys. Chassagne thinks that they are are the ones who killed the three German soldiers who were killed by the communists. Chassagne knows that Marchetti is the one who killed a German border soldier near the Swiss border. Chassagne knows of Judith and that she is in a refugee camp outside of Switzerland and threatens to have her picked up and deported to Poland.

Jules and Lucienne start to grow closer to Marguerite, the new teacher. Jules comes out and tells her this but still tells her that he isn't with the Resistance. Lucienne confides in Marguerite about Kurt.

Hortense turns to the black market to get morphine for Heinrich. She gets it but then she gets picked up by the police. Chassagne intervenes and gets Hortense released. He even gives her the morphine. He suggests that she should come to him if she needs any more. Hortense gives the morphine to Heinrich but she tells him that she got it from Daniel.

Antoine and his men catch a few German soldiers going for a swim. One of the German soldiers gets shot in the gut by Antoine. The group votes and agrees to get a doctor rather than just let the German soldier die from the wound.

Josephine goes to the forest to see Antoine. When she returns she tells Raymond about the visit to the forest to see her brother. They don't know it but Eliane is eavesdropping on their conversation.

Thoughts

Daniel, Sarah, Marcel, Suzanne, and the communists are not in this episode.

I have my doubts about Claude and Marguerite. I suspect them both of working for the Vichy government. I could be wrong about this but that's what I sense. I will be very surprised if I am wrong about both of them.

I think Chassagne is starting to make a few too many enemies. I think that he has just given Marchetti a reason to want him dead. He is pretty close to giving Müller a reason to want him dead.

I checked and the actor who plays Josephine is 21 years older than the one who plays Antoine. The characters are siblings. It isn't un heard of to have such a large age difference between siblings but it is significant.

This episode was a little better than the first three in this season. I'm still not completely won over but I think that I am in this for the long haul.
