The Making of 'Dog Day Afternoon' (2006)

directed by Laurent Bouzereau

58 minutes

The following people were interviewed for this documentary
  • Dede Allen, editor
  • Martin Bregman, producer
  • Charles Durning, Moretti
  • Burtt Harris, assistant director
  • Lance Henriksen, Murphy
  • Victor Kemper, cinematography
  • Sidney Lumet, director
  • Al Pacino, Sonny
  • Frank Pierson, writer
  • Chris Sarandon, Leon
The documentary is divided into four segments.
  • The Story
  • Casting the Controversy
  • Recreating the Facts
  • After the Filming
Frank Pierson is the dominant presence in the first segment. Sidney Lumet is the dominant presence in the other three segments.

The titles for the segments basically sumarize what they were about. All of them were worth watching. They gave me a greater appreciation for what went into writing the script and making the movie from various perspectives.

I recognized the documentary director's name but I had to look him up to find the other work of his that I had seen. It was Five Came Back, the Netflix documentary that was based on the book of the same name that I read a couple years ago. I watched the three-part documentary series a little over a year ago.

The Making of 'Dog Day Afternoon' was included in the DVD set for Dog Day Afternoon that I borrowed from the library.
