L'Arrestation
or The Arrest

Marcel, Suzanne, and the other communists find out that the police are making enquiries. They are worried that their contact at the cafe will get arrested. They draw straws to see who will go in to town to warn him. Marcel draws the short straw but Suzanne insists on accompanying him.

Antoine gets the name of Daniel Larcher from Anselme, the farmer. He gets Daniel to go with him, at gun point when Dr. Larcher refuses. He brings him out into the forest and makes him treat the wounded German soldier.

Marchetti visits the Schwartz mill. He arrests Josephine. He tells Raymond that if she won't talk then he will have to hand her over to the Germans. Raymond gives him the name of Anselme.

Sarah is planning a surprise birthday party for Daniel. The Vichy militia comes by while Daniel is away in the forest. They arrest Ezéchiel Cohn and Sarah.

Marcel and Suzanne get into a fight while they are bicycling into Villeneuve. They have to wait for their contact to show up. He finally does. Marcel steps away from the table to talk to him. Suzanne leaves him a note while he is away from the table and then leaves the café.

Marguerite gives Sarah some singing lessons.

Marie visits Antoine's group when she finds out that they are holding Dr. Larcher for a few days. She tells him that keeping him will arouse a lot of suspicion but he doesn't seem to care.

The Vichy Militia visits the café minutes after Suzanne leaves. Marcel gets arrested. His identity card says his name is Jean-Paul but the note from Suzanne is addressed to Marcel. He is taken away for questioning.

Anselme is arrested by Marchetti's men. They rough him up but he won't tell them anything. They bring in Josephine but she claims not to know him. Marchetti burns Anselme a few times with cigarettes. Josephine kills herself jumping out a window, a couple floors up, rather than talk.

Suzanne gets back to the communist hideout and finds out that Marcel has been arrested. Marcel is badly tortured and then thrown in a cell with a bunch of men, one of whom is Anselme.

Thoughts

Hortense, Heinrich, Chassagne, and Jeanine are not in this episode.

I don't think Marcel is going to survive much longer. I'm not sure what is going to happen to Sarah, Ezéchiel Cohn, or Anselme. I'm not terribly impressed with Antoine at the moment. He seems to be taking a pretty big risk, whether he realizes it or not, to save the life of a German soldier. He doesn't know yet that his sister is dead.

This was a pretty dark episode. The only light moments were those of Marguerite, Lucienne, and Jules. It was hard to enjoy those moments considering how badly things were going for several other people. Will it continue to get worse in the next episode? I don't know. It would be bad enough if it was one person but they seem to be dropping the boom on a number of people as the same time.
