Sinners (2025)

Sinners (2025)

starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld
directed by Ryan Coogler

Twin brothers Smoke (Michael B. Jordan) and Stack (Michael B. Jordan) return in 1932 to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta. The brothers served in the military in World War 1 and spent the last seven years working for mobsters in Chicago. They open a juke joint in an abandoned saw mill but they run into some trouble on opening night.

Thoughts

The movie takes place, more or less, over the course of 24 hours. This stretches credibility but there are also supernatural elements in this film. The supernatural elements are not overtly credited in any way with the speed with which the juke joint gets up and running.

On the whole I was very pleased and impressed with this movie. It is not perfect. The plot is messy. It moves very fast but (considering how long it is) that's a point in its favor. There were a number of moments that got me a bit emotional. They usually involved music.

The way that music is used in this movie is my number one reason to see it and to recommend it to others. There are some horror elements. They do not dominate the movie but they are definitely a part of it and can't be ignored. I would happily watch this movie again. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen.
