Episode 7
Hualin, 2016. Gong Biao encounters a man while he is buying a lottery ticket. He follows the guy back to his car. It looks like cab that had the same license plate as his car. Biao grabs the guy and holds him while he calls Wang Xiang and Ma Desheng. They turn the guy over to the police and Gong Biao gets his taxi cab back.
Xiang, Biao, and Ma Desheng go out to celebrate but an argument breaks out. Xiang thinks that the person who was hit by the cab was also the one who killed Yang. He thinks that person is Fu Weijun, Shen Mo's brother. Xiang refuses to accept the official story that Yang committed suicide. Ma Desheng disagrees. They both wind up walking out of the restaurant in different directions. Biao is left sitting alone.
Biao goes home where Huang Liru, his wife, is in an argument with a client who says she screwed up one of her eyelids. Biao unsuccessfully tries to help Liru get out of the situation unscathed. Later she tells him that she thinks they should get a divorce.
Biao goes to Xiang's place and is making preparations to sleep there when Ma Desheng shows up. He's there to tell them that Fu Weijun is dead. He died in prison a month earlier.
Hualin, 1997. Fu Weijun and Sui Dong find Shen Dongliang's son and break his arm. Shen Mo's uncle gets the message, backs off, and leaves town with his wife. He makes sure Shen Mo knows that he isn't through with her.
Shen Mo invites Wang Yang over to watch Titanic with her. She has the DVD. Yang is puzzled as to who the two guys with her are. Shen Mo explains that Fu Weijun is her brother, that he's hearing impaired, and why he has a different surname. She chose the local nursing school so that she could be close to her brother.
Hualin, 1998. More evidence is found. Xing Jianchun talks Xiang into standing watch in the foundry of the factory. He says that he will come and relieve him but he never does. He gives him a whistle (that doesn't work) so he can call for help if he sees anything. Gong Biao comes looking for Xiang. Biao feels as though his relationship with Liru isn't going well. The two men talk and cook potatoes in the factory.
Ma Desheng figures out that the body must be that of a missing student, Shen Mo. He learns that Wang Yang was her boyfriend and has him brought in for questioning. Xiang learns about it after Ma Desheng summons him to police headquarters. Ma Desheng explains that Xiang can't work with the police any longer.
Xiang and Yang head home on one bicycle Xiang is pedaling. He is berating Yang who only takes it for so long and then takes off running through a cornfield. Xiang is unable to find him. Yang doesn't come home that night.
Shen Dongliang and his wife are brought in for questioning by Ma Desheng. Someone started a rumor that Shen Mo was working in pornography. Ma Desheng is getting ready to go to Songhe, where Shen Dongliang lives. He suspects that Shen Mo's uncle is behind that pornography rumors. Ma Desheng's boss doesn't want to hear about it. He wants progress on the embezzlement case. Ma Desheng leaves that night and heads to Songhe.
Wang Xiang gets up in the middle of the night. He goes to his son's room. His son has not returned home. Under the bed he finds an old bag that contains a hazmat suit. There is blood on the hazmat suit.
Thoughts
There were a number of spots where the subtitles were confusing and didn't make a lot of sense to me. It felt like a number of things were being translated much too literally.
I was glad to see Shen Dongliang back off of Shen Mo. I'm not sure what role Fu Weijun and Sui Dong are going to play in the story going forward but I'm eager to see what that that role is. So far they have only appeared in scenes that take place in 1997. It really hurts to see Xiang give his son such a hard time.
It's unclear to me how Gong Biao's relationship is going to feed into the larger story. It feels like filler up to this point. I want to believe there is more to it than that. Up until this point I assumed that Shen Mo was the one who was murdered but now there seems to be more evidence to indicate that she was. I don't think that Wang Yang killed Shen Mo but the final scene seems to suggest that he did.
I am now more than halfway through this show. I can't see myself stopping now although it will probably take me another five weeks to finish it off.
