starring Ray Milland
directed by Roger Corman
79 minutes
Doctor James Xavier (Ray Milland) tests experimental eyedrops on himself. The eyedrops give him x-ray vision. He can see through walls, clothing, and other objects. He continues to take the drops until his vision becomes unbearable.
Doctor Xavier accidentally kills a friend by pushing him out a window. He goes on the run and starts working in a carnival to make ends meet. He gets strong armed into leaving the carnival by Crane, one of the other carnies. Crane has a crazy scheme to make money by using Xavier's x-ray vision to diagnose poor people's health problems.
Xavier works for Crane until Doctor Diane Fairfax, an old friend of his, shows up and offers to help him. They escape but they need money to fund the research necessary to find a cure for Xavier's condition.
Xavier and Fairfax go to Las Vegas where he wins a boatload of money but not without arousing the suspicion of a casino manager. The police are called in to investigate but Xavier takes off in a stolen car.
Thoughts
Don Rickles played the part of Crane. I've also seen him in Casino (1995) and he was also the voice of Mister Potato Head in the Toy Story movies, which I have also seen.
John Hoyt played the part of Doctor Benson. This is at least the fifth movie that he has been in that I have seen. Other movies that he has been in that I have seen in recent years include Brute Force (1947), When Worlds Collide (1951), The Big Combo (1955), and Desperately Seeking Susan (1985).
Why did Doctor Xavier keep putting the drops in his eyes? Was he addicted to them? This might be the most ridiculous, unexplained part of this movie. His condition kept getting worse because he kept making it worse! WTF, Doctor X?
This film has its moments. Usually they made me laugh. Outside of those moments, I didn't feel like I got very much out of it.
