Alfred Hitchcock Presents 1.22

Place of Shadows

starring Everett Sloane
written by Robert C. Dennie
directed by Robert Stevens

Ray Clements goes to a monastery looking for a man who stole some money from him. Clements intends to kill him when he finds him. Father Vincente (Everett Sloane) and Brother Gerard try to convince Clements to give up his quest for revenge. Clements leaves after he gets the money back but not long after that he is attacked and badly injured by another man, Floyd Unser.

Clements shoots and kills Unser. Clements returns to the monastery and asks for help. The police are looking for him. Clements confesses to Father Vincente and Brother Gerard. He tells them the story of what happened after he left the monastery. He admits that they were right about killing. The police decide to leave Clements be considering that Clements only shot Under in self defense.

Thoughts

This episode was fairly heavy handed. There really didn't seem to be much to it other than the moral that killing is wrong. None of the characters were particularly interesting. I can't think of a good reason to recommend it to anyone.

Notes

This is the second of three episode of this show in which Everett Sloane appeared. The previous one was 1.08 Our Cook's a Treasure. I've also seen him in an episode of The Twilight Zone, 1.17 The Fever.

Sean McClory played the part of Brother Gerard. This is the first of two episodes of this show in which he appeared. He was also in one episode each of Four Star Playhouse and The Outer Limits (1963).

Mark Damon played the part of Ray Clements. This is the only episode of this show in which he appeared.

Claude Akins played the part of one the police officers who went to the monastery looking for Ray Clements. This is the first of two episodes of this show in which he appeared. I saw him most recently in an episode of Kraft Suspense Theatre, 2.02 Operation Greif.

This is the sixth of 30 episodes of this show that Robert C. Dennis wrote. The last episode he wrote prior to this one was 1.19 The Derelicts.

This is the eighth of 44 episodes of this show that were directed by Robert Stevens. The last episode he directed prior to this one was 1.18 Shopping for Death.
