or The Wrestling Women vs. the Aztec Mummy
starring Lorena Velázquez, Armando Silvestre, Elizabeth Campbell
written by Guillermo Calderón, Alfredo Salazar
directed by René Cardona
95 minutes
in Spanish with English subtitles
Las Luchadoras, the wrestling team of Gloria Venus (Lorena Velázquez) and Golden Rubi (Elizabeth Campbell), help police officers Armando Rios (Armando Silvestre) and Chucho Gomez battle the forces of the Black Dragon and his gang. The Black Dragon is after the three pieces of the Aztec codex, as are Dr. Luis Trelles and his daughter Chela.
I found out about this movie thanks to a post on Bluesky.
The title say it all? Not exactly. The wrestling duo do come face to face with the mummy but they don't actually engage it in hand-to-hand combat. The mummy doesn't appear in the first hour of the movie. Most of the movie is focused on the police and the wrestling women trying to keep Black Dragon from getting his hands on the pieces of the Aztek codex. About one quarter of the first hour consists of Las Luchadoras wrestling both inside and outside of the ring.
I can't say that I love this movie or even really liked it. I did laugh a few times but not heartily. The fight scenes aren't bad. I don't regret watching it but I doubt that I will watch it again. I wasn't expecting a subtle story but some of the transitions were fairly clunky. It probably didn't help that I was watching it on YouTube with auto-translate turned on. The translations didn't always make sense. There is an English dubbed version on YouTube. I might have enjoyed that a little more.
Notes
I was not familiar with any of the cast or crew of this film prior to watching it and doing a little research.
Lorena Velázquez was the runner up in the Miss Mexico competition in 1958. She had a lengthy career in film in television, working up until just a few years before her death in 2024. Armando Silvestre was a Mexican-American actor who worked extensively in Mexico. He died in 2024 at the age of 98. Elizabeth Campbell was an American actress who worked mostly in Mexico during the 1960s. René Cardona was a Cuban-Mexican actor and director who appeared in more than 120 films and directed almost 150 films.
