Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 2.14

Whispers

Chief O'Brien knows that something is wrong but he can't figure out what it is. What he knows is that everyone is acting strange. Everyone includes Keiko, Sisko, Odo, Kira, Jake, Julian, and Quark. He tries running scans but nothing comes up as reading unusual. Things that should be in proper working order are not. Keiko prepares a meal that she hates, but that she knows he loves.

Chief O'Brien can't figure out what's causing the problem. He becomes increasingly paranoid. It leads him to eventually flee the space station and head through the wormhole. He's convinced that whatever is going on has something to do with the Paradas, a race with whom they recently made first contact. Eventually he gets his answer.

Thoughts

Chief O'Brien narrates this episode. Most of it is told as a flashback. It is not until the last act or two that the story moves past where it opens up. O'Brien is in just about every scene because he is the narrator.

I enjoyed this episode very much but I'm not sure if the reveal in the end works. I think I like it because it has a very noir feel to it. I'm not sure what else to say without going into great detail and spoiling the ending.

Notes

There are no guest stars who played a significant part in this episode.

Paul Robert Coyle wrote this episode. It is the only episode of this show that he wrote. He also wrote one episode of Voyager.

This is the fifth of 14 episodes of this show that Les Landau directed. The episode of this show that he directed prior to this one was 2.10 Sanctuary. More recently I have seen an episode of TNG he directed, 2.17 Samaritan Snare.
