Homecoming - Part 1
Beast Boy receives a distress call from Mento, one of his former teammates in the Doom Patrol. The Teen Titans accompany Beast Boy as he searches for the Doom Patrol. The search leans them to a forest where first they find Robot Man and then the rest of the Doom Patrol (Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, Mento). Robot Man was left for dead but the other three are the prisoners Of the Brain and Monsieur Mallah. The Titans rescue them but the Brain and Monsieur Mallah escape with their latest weapon, a quantum generator.
The Doom Patrol were kind of, sort of predecessors of the Teen Titans. Beast Boy first appeared in an issue of Doom Patrol and was a member of that team. They were killed off in the late 1960s in Doom Patrol (1964) 121 (Sep/Oct 1968). Robot Man and Mento returned in New Teen Titans (1980) 13, 14, and 15 but Negaive Man and Elasti-Girl did not.
There is no sign of Niles Caulder, aka the Chief, in this version of the Doom Patrol. It was he who brought together Robot Man, Elasti-Girl, and Negative Man. He was the leader of the team in the 1960s and was killed along with them in 1968.
Mento seems to be have taken the Chief's place in the cartoon as the leader of the team. Mento wasn't an original member of the team but he did appear in the comic book. He was more of an ally them a member of the team. The costume he wears in this episode is more similar to what he wore during the 1960s than to what he wore in the 1980s.
Mento comes down very hard on Beast Boy both in a flashback to five years earlier and in the present. He faults BB for prioritizing saving his teammates (in both cases) over stopping the bad guys.
Most of the focus in this episode is on the Doom Patrol. The four Teen Titans who are not Beast Boy seem to be supporting characters in this episode and don't get much in the way of lines or moments to shine.
It was fun to see the Doom Patrol brought to life in a cartoon but there wasn't much or enough in the way of character moments to really satisfy me.
