starring Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, Geoffrey Jones, Catherine O'Hara
directed by Tim Burton
92 minutes
Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara Maitland (Geena Davis) die in a vehicle accident. Charles (Jeffrey Jones) and Delia Deetz (Catherine O'Hara) buy the home that used belong to the Maitlands, unaware that the two former residents are still there. Lydia (Winona Ryder), Charles daughter by a previous relationship, is the only one who can see Adam and Barbara. The two ghosts try haunting the house but Charles and Delia either ignore them or think that what the Adam and Barbara are doing is wonderful.
Adam and Barbara consider turning to Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) for help but are warned against it by Juno, their case worker in the afterlife. They eventually do call on him for help but later regret that decision and call off their agreement. Lydia makes a deal with Beetlejuice and brings him back when it looks like Adam and Barbara are in danger but she quickly regrets it.
Thoughts
I don't recall when I last watched this movie. It certainly wasn't any time recently. I'm sure that I have seen it at least a few times before. I might have even owned it on VHS or DVD at some point. I didn't see it in the theatre when it was first released. I'm pretty sure that Batman (1989) was the first Tim Burton film that I saw.
Robert Goulet and Dick Cavett are also in this movie.
This movie has lots of funny moments. The special effects are definitely dated and probably don't hold up according to some people's standards. I enjoyed watching this film once again but I'm not sure I would call it a favorite today. It's good. I enjoy the humor and the spectacle but the story could use some work.
