Happiest Season (2020)

starring Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis, Mary Steenburgen, Victor Garber, Alison Brie
written and directed by Clea DuVall

Abby goes to her girlfriend's home for Christmas. Abby doesn't learn until they are almost there that Harper lied about telling her parents that she is gay. Harper's father is running for mayor. Abby agrees to keep their relationship a secret from Harper's parents for the five days that they will be there. Her family thinks that Abby is just Harper's roommate.

Everything that could possibly go wrong does. There all sorts of double entendres. Abby meets Riley (Aubrey Plaza), Harper's first girlfriend, and Connor, her boyfriend from high school. Harper spends more time with Connor than with Abby. It gets to be too much for Abby to take. She is ready to leave when everything blows up towards the end.

Thoughts

One thing that threw me for a loop in the first few minutes of the movie is that I am used to Mackenzie Davis having light blond hair as she did in Halt and Catch Fire, and Kristen Stewart having brown hair. It took me a few minutes to realize that but I kept thinking about it throughout the movie.

This was really funny at first but the movie got increasingly tense as Harper tried to maintain the illusion that she was straight. There were lots of laughs early on but the ending was very moving as Harper and Abby feel themselves pushed to do things that they fear to do.

I'm not usually into rom-coms or holiday movies but I really liked this one.
