The Forever War
Two months have passed since the Yamato left Iskandar and started the journey back to Earth. The Yamato heads for the Balun System. They stop along the way to help a Gamilan ship that is stranded. The crew of the Yamato have plans to use the gate to jump 60,000 light years back towards Earth. They are surprised to find the the system has been decimated but the gate is still there.
A Gamilan fleet led by Admiral Goer has laid a trap for the Yamato. The Gamilans attack just as the Yamato is getting ready to jump through the gate. The attack is countered by the Gamilan dimensional submarine which has been sent by Admiral Ditz to hunt down Admiral Goer. The Yamato escapes through the gate while the dimensional submarine deals with Goer's flagship.
The fight isn't over once the Yamato enters the gate but Goer is no longer the enemy as the Yamato is attacked by Desler in his flag ship. Gamiloids board the Yamato and come close to taking it over but they are repulsed by a virus that is unleashed upon them.
Desler is (finally?) killed. The Yamato emerges from the other end of the gate still intact despite having suffered much damage. Many were killed in the fight including Yuki, or so it seems.
Thoughts
Just when I thought it couldn't any more ridiculous it does. I think that there are moments in this episode that are supposed to be heart-felt but I wasn't feeling them. There is, once again, too much going on and the Yamato continues to keep going strong despite what quite often seems like impossible situations and heavy damage.
