The Phil Silvers Show 1.16

Hollywood

Sgt Bilko is sent to Hollywood by the Pentagon as a technical advisor to Cecil D. Chadwick Productions. The studio is making a movie about the Battle of Kombuchi called Love in a Foxhole. Bilko is a veteran of the battle. The studio doesn't really want his input and tries to run him off the lot but Bilko is a little too slick for them. He threatens to call the Hollywood press and tell them how the studio has been treating him if they don't let him stick around.

Thoughts

Most of this episode takes place in Hollywood. Colonel Hall is in this episode but most of the regulars on this show, including Corporal Barbella and Corporal Henshaw, are not.

Eric Fleming plays Rory Mundane, the actor who is playing the part of the hero of the movie that Chadwick Production is making about the Battle of Kombuchi. Fleming played the lead in Rawhide for the first 7 (of 8) seasons of the TV show. Fleming shows up in two more episodes of The Phil Silvers Shows, the next one is in season 1 and the other is in season 2.

Other movie titles that come up in this episode include They Met on Okinawa and Iwo Jima Baby. The original title for Love in a Foxhole was Guns, Guts, and Gals.

Jule Styne, composer of Broadway musicals, appears in this episode as himself.

This isn't my favorite episode but it was fun to see Bilko beat the Hollywood system.
