Dogtooth (2009)

Original title: Kynodontas
Greek with English subtitles

starring Christos Stergioglou, Michelle Valley, Angeliki Papoulia, Mary Tsoni, Christos Passalis, Anna Kalaitzidou
directed by Yorgos Lanthimos

The father of a family of five keeps his family in a secluded compound. His wife, two adult daughters, and adult son live with him. He refuses to let them leave. He and his wife tell their children lies about the outside world to keep them from attempting to leave.

The father brings Christina, a coworker, home for his son. She is there to satisfy the son's sexual needs. Christina's conversations with the children puts some ideas in their heads.

The father has told his children that they can leave when one of their dogteeth, incisors, come out.

The father eventually stops bringing Christina around when he finds out some of what she did. This leads him to do something even more unthinkable.

Thoughts

This is a disturbing movie. There is no two ways about it. The situation is weird and gets weirder. It is unclear how complicit the mother is in everything, although it does seem that their way of life is the father's idea.

The sex in this movie is not sexy in the least bit. There is a certain amount of nudity, both male and female. It is not done to titillate.

I wouldn't recommend this movie to everyone. It didn't sound appealing to me when I first heard about it. It didn't sound like it was going to be fun to watch and it wasn't. It did keep my attention but it also made me shake my head and horrify me on more than one occasion.
