Paris Blues (1961)

starring Paul Newman, Sidney Poiter, Joanne Woodward, Diahann Carroll. Louis Armstrong
directed by Martin Ritt

Two women who are in Paris on vacation meet two American men who live and work in Paris. The women, individually, try to convince the men, after falling for them, to return to the United States with them. The men want to but they have their own reasons for wanting to stay in Paris.

Thoughts

Despite the appearance of the poster, the movie is in black and white.

This movie is fairly tame by today's standards but I found at least one movie poster which indicates that it is "Not Suitable for Children". I can imagine that this probably didn't play everywhere in the United States when it first was released.

The book on which the movie is based is about an interracial romance. The story was changed for the movie so that Paul Newman is paired up with Joanne Woodward and Sidney Poitier with Diahann Carroll.

This movie was nominated for one Oscar for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture. The composer was Duke Ellington. The winner of the Academy Award that year was West Side Story.

Martin Ritt, the director, also directed The Front (1976)

This is a decent movie but it is not great. I like it mostly for the street scenes of Paris and the music.
