The Phil Silvers Show 2.06

Bilko's War Against Culture

The US Army sends a new culture officer to Fort Baxter to try and get the men to stop gambling and start doing something more acceptable. Sgt Bilko thinks that he has his men hooked on gambling but Lt Roxberry has an edge on Bilko. She gets all the men to sign up for her classes.

Bilko strikes back by convincing the men that the classes are just going to lead to more work for them. The lieutenant throws in the towel and concedes defeat. Bilko feels bad when he learns that this was her first assignment. He puts on a show to convince Lt Roxberry that the men really did learn something from her classes.

Thoughts

Not the best but I did enjoy this episode. It was a little ridiculous how quickly Lt. Roxberry threw in the towel. She seemed very determined at first and then she just gave up. I think they could have handled that part better and still preserved the level of humor.

Notes

Dina Merrill played the part of Lt. Roxberry. She has over 100 screen credits according to IMDb. This is the second of two appearances she made on the show. The first appearance was an uncredited role in 1.21 (Bilko's Rest Cure). She also played the part of Calamity Jan in three episodes of Batman in 1968.

Mara McAfee played the part of Corporal Sandberg. This is the first of two appearances she made on the show. Her other appearance is in an episode from season 3. It was also her last screen credit according to IMDb.

Aaron Ruben plays the part of Lieutenant Ruben. He is credited as the writer of this episode. He also directed thirty-one 3rd and 4th season episodes of this show. He also produced 159 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show and 62 episodes of Sanford and Son. He was the executive producer of all 150 episodes of Gomer Pyle: USMC. This is just one of two acting credits he has on IMDb.
