directed by James Signorelli
Monty Capuletti (Rodney Dangerfield) tries to reform after his mother-in-law dies. Rose, his wife, stands to inherit $10 million from her mother's estate but only if Monty can lose weight and give up all his bad habits including gambling, smoking, and drinking. Nicky (Joe Pesce) and Monty's other friends try to be helpful but they don't set a good example for him to follow.
That is the premise of the movie but there's a fair amount of plot that leads up to that point. The first half hour of the movie sets the scene and revolves around the preparations for Allison's (Jennifer Jason Leigh) wedding to Julio (Taylor Negron). The rest of the movie is about Monty's attempts to reform and then stay on the straight and narrow for one year, as stipulated in his mother-in-law's will.
Jeffrey Jones plays Clive, Rose's cousin who stands to inherit the money if Monty can't keep away from his bad habits. Clive does what his can to make it difficult for Monty to be good.
I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out. I enjoyed it then and I enjoyed it this time around. I'm not sure how many times I have seen it over the years. It is kind of silly but I think that it is fun to watch.
