Doctor Who (1963) 6.05.01

The Seeds of Death - Episode 1

Earth's T-Mat operations get interrupted when aliens arrive on the moonbase. One of the men on duty sabotages the T-Mat on the Moon. He is killed by the aliens and then the others are ordered to repair it.

The Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe arrive on Earth in the TARDIS which materializes in a museum. Professor Daniel Eldred, the museum's owner, doesn't take kindly to the Doctor and his companions whom he considers to be trespassers and spies. The Doctor manages to convince Professor Eldred that he is very interested in the rockets in the museum.

Rockets have been abandoned in favor of T-Mat, which allows for instantaneous travel. Professor Eldred is a big advocate and expert in the subject of rocket science. The Doctor and the professor are in the middle of comparing notes when Radnor and Gia Kelly come to see him. They need his help.

Radnor and Kelly know that he has built a rocket. They want him to fly to the Moon and figure out what is going on up there. Just as they are explaining to him that they aren't sure what the problem is they get an emergency message from the Moon. One of the technicians on the Moon has fixed the video link and is attempting to warn them about the aliens. He gets cut off and killed, mid-sentence, by one of the aliens.

Thoughts

The only stories with the 2nd Doctor that I have seen before this one are The Two Doctors, The Three Doctors, The Five Doctors, and Enemy of the World.

The special effects aren't great but this is a BBC made production from the late 1960s. Expectations have to be kept to a minimum.

This is a good start to this six-part story. I like how it opens without the Doctor and his companions and sets the scene before adding them to the mix. I like that that there is a woman in this episode that isn't one of the Doctor's companions. I'm looking forward to seeing where this story goes next.
