The Reverse Midas Touch
One of the Dominican inmates chases Linda. Linda loses her outside and hides in one of the porta-johns. Doggett is in the next porta-john. They talk for a while. They seem to be getting along. Linda suggests that they use the backhor and make a break for it. Doggett is interested until Linda lets her out and Doggett sees with whom she has been talking. She slugs Linda in the face and then runs off.
Piscatella ties up Red and starts to mess with her in front of the others he has assembled. He cuts off a fair amount of her hair, leaving the top of her head bald.
Piscatella gets the backstory spotlight. It is all about his time as a CO at a men's maximum security prison. He develops a relationship with one of the inmates. The inmate gets beaten up and raped by other prisoners. Piscatella gets revenge on one of them.
Berlin's friends in the bunker start to get on her nerves. They don't seem to enjoy it as much as she does. The entrance to the bunker is in the room where Piscatella is torturing Red and has the other tied up. They hear screams and investigate.
Angie and Leanne go on a quest to get Leanne's finger fixed. They find what looks like a piece of her finger. They take it to medical and try to get the nurse to sew it back on but he says it is too late so they go looking for a fresh finger to replace the missing piece of Leanne's finger. They pick Stratman to be the donor. He says that if she is going to use his finger to finger herself then maybe she should take it for a test drive first.
Caputo continues to debate with Figueroa about the conditions in the prison. It gets a bit personal. Warren cleans up her face. She finds Kukudio collapsed in a stall in the bathroom. She takes her to medical but the nurse has already left with Leanne and Angie by the time they get there. Warren gets obsessed with Humphries who doesn't seem to be breathing. She loads him in a wheelchair and goes looking for Taystee.
Mendoza continues to work on her two fellow inmates who are guarding the hostages. She convinces them that they have been awake for too long and need a break. While they are gone she makes a move to free them out but the two inmates return before she can get very far with them.
The episode ends with Berlin, Murphy, and the others in bunker setting a trap for Piscatella. He walks right into it. Berlin shoots him with a dart laced with something that incapacitates him.
Thoughts
There are a number of inmates who are not in this episode. I guess Daya and Aleida are out of it for the rest of the season. They might show up very briefly but I don't expect them to play a major part in any of the remaining episodes. I think the same is true of Judy King. It looks like Humphries is just a corpse but that isn't certain. I don't expect him to make a dramatic recovery. I'm not sure what the story is with Kukudio but she doesn't seem to be in great shape.
Angie and Leanne are nutty as fruitcakes. Angie manages to get in another racist remark.
The flashback scene where Piscatella gets revenge on the inmate who hurt his friend was chilling. Charlie Barnett plays the inmate whom Piscatella gets involved. He also played Alan, one of the main characters in Russian Doll. One thing that has not really been addressed in the flashbacks is the fact that Piscatella's relationship is uneven to the point that the inmate doesn't really have a choice in the matter. It is akin to a supervisor starting a relationship with one of his employees but it is more uneven that that. Piscatella and the inmate may seem happy together but one of them has considerably more power in the relationship.
I wonder how Linda's story in this season is going to wind down? I fast forwarded through the final episode of season 4 to try and see which inmates might have crossed paths with Linda. The only one that I noticed who saw her was Taystee.
I'm starting to wonder when and where this season is going to end. I'm pretty sure that the prison will be back in the hands of the authorities but when exactly that will happen is unclear to me. I could see it happening as early as the end of the 12th episode and as late as just before the end of the 13th episode.
I really enjoyed this episode. This makes three in a row that I thought were really good. I like the pacing and the way things are working out.
