Vampira and Me (2012)

Vampira and Me (2012)

starring Maila Nurmi, Gloria Pall, Ray Greene
written and directed by Ray Greene

This documentary is about the life of Maila Nurmi who was also known as Vampira. She was the host of a late night show on a couple Los Angeles television stations in the mid-1950s. She was extremely popular and became very well known nationwide during her moment of fame, which lasted for roughly a year. Most of her appearances on her show were broadcast live and never recorded. There are a only a few minutes of her from her show that are known to exist. She made appearances on a handful of other shows, some of which were broadcast nationally.

Her marriage and her career as a TV host ended abruptly in the mid-1950s. She was never accepted by the A-list Hollywood stars. She was friends with James Dean, went on a date with Elvis Presley, and had a romantic relationship with Orson Welles. She was rediscovered and worked with some musical acts in the 1980s. She might be best known for one of her last screen performances in the 1950s as Vampira in Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957).

The movie includes clips of her television appearances from the 1950s. Interlaced throughout the movie is an interview she did with writer/director Ray Greene late in her life.

I found this movie to be both informative and moving, and well worth my time.
