My Suicidal Sweetheart (2005)

My Suicidal Sweetheart (2005)

starring Natasha Lyonne, David Krumholtz, Tim Blake Nelson
directed by Michael Parness

91 minutes

Max (David Krumholtz) attempts to kill himself, several times. His parents have him committed to a psychiatric hospital after his eighth attempt. Max kept trying because he hoped it was would lead to a beautiful vision of white light. Max changes his mind, while he is in the hospital, when he meets Grace (Natasha Lyonne).

Grace is also suicidal. Max falls in love with Grace. He convinces her to marry him. They stay at the hospital, against their will, after they get married. They escape once it gets to be too much and they can't stand it there. They go to see his parents (in New York) and her mother (in Wisconsin). Grace gets pregnant at some point.

Thoughts

This is described as a comedy but it feels more like a drama with some comedic moments. Max is on edge for most of the movie, concerned that Grace will kill herself. Grace seems kind of out of it for most of the movie. She's there but it's unclear where she is mentally at many moments.

This movie has been marketed under at least three different titles. It was originally going to be called Max and Grace but that was changed to My Suicidal Sweetheart just before it was released. It was retitled Crazy for Love when it was released on DVD. That is the title that I found it under when I watched it on Amazon Prime.

Tim Blake Nelson plays four different characters in this movie. They are all healers, of varying stripes, that Max and Grace meet either at the hospital or during their trip to Wisconsin. There are a few other actors in this movie that I have seen in other films, namely Lorraine Bracco, David Paymer, and Rosanna Arquette.

I had a hard time figuring out where this movie was going. It feels very much like something that would have been shown at the Talk Cinema series that I used to go to 20 plus years ago. It definitely has an indie movie feel to it. There are dream sequences and hallucinations, all of which are experienced by Max, who also narrates parts of the movie.

This movie is okay. It has a happy ending. It's not awful but it's also not a must see movie for me.
