Trapped in an Elevator
Caputo has the women in his restorative justice class write letters of apology to someone whom they wronged. Ruiz feels as though she doesn't owe anyone an apology. Cindy doesn't know what to write or how to apologize. to Taystee.
Ruiz gets the backstory spotlight. It is about how she wound up in prison and her relationship with Yadriel, her boyfriend, and how she was cheating on him just before she was arrested.
Ward meets with Linda who wants her to answer questions for the press. MCC is panning to shut down the psych ward and use it to house more prisoners. Linda wants Ward to deal with the reporters. Ward goes to Fig for advice on how to handle the interview. Ward feels very unprepared and unsure about it.
Caputo finds out that he needs to get an operation to help the chances of getting Fig pregnant. He refuses at first. After he hears some of the apology letters written by the inmates in his class he changes his mind.
McCullough and Vause get closer to crossing the line. Vause encourages Piper to find someone else with whom she can hook up.
Cindy writes a letter to her mother, apologizing for all the trouble she has caused her. She reads it to the class. She later calls her mother and apologizes to her. Cindy gets early release as she was promised.
Ruiz comes around and sees that she owes Yadriel an apology. She calls him and then she talks to him in person when he comes to visit. He has met another woman and wants to move in with her which will of course mean moving Ruiz's daughter in with her too. Ruiz fights him on it at first but later concedes.
Taystee contemplates doing something to Cindy before she gets out. Ultimately she decides not to do her physical harm. She instead writes Monica, Cindy's daughter, a letter telling her who her real biological mother is.
Thoughts
Doggett, Aleida, Flores, and the ICE kitchen crew were not in this episode. There weren't any scenes that took place in the ICE detention facility.
I wasn't sure what Taystee was going to do. I really wondered if Cindy wasn't going to leave prison alive or without serious physical injury. It's unclear to me if they will show the impact on Cindy's relationship with her mother and her daughter. My guess is that they won't revisit that until the final episode.
There are a lot of things still in the air, waiting to get resolved. Ward is still the warden. How long will that last? Will Linda get some payback for what she has done? How will things work out for Taystee? How about Dayanara? It looks very much like Vause and McCullough are going to hook up but that could just be misdirection. I don't think Piper deserves an extra happy ending, considering all the crap she has pulled over the course of the series.
This was a good episode. It had a couple moments that were very moving. I don't think its my favorite but I liked it and am looking forward to more of the same.
