starring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen
written by Russell Gewirtz
directed by Spike Lee
129 minutes
NYPD Detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) is called on to negotiate a hostage crisis after a group of armed men take over a bank. Dalton Russell (Clive Owen) the man behind the bank heist, keeps Frazier and the police at bay and confused while he and his gang do what they came to do in the bank. It isn't until late in the game that Frazier discovers that he's been had and how.
This film has a very simple premise but the devil is in the details. The performances by the lead actors and the primary supporting actors are all very good. I like the way it is shot. It keeps the viewers on their toes as much as it does the police.
I like this movie for the most part. I found the ending to be not as satisfying as I wanted it to be. The ending was a little too near and tidy. It didn't deliver a twist that was to my liking.
Notes
This is at least the 15th movie that Denzel Washington has been in that I have watched. Recently watched films that he was in include Highest 2 Lowest (2025), Training Day (2001), and Mo' Better Blues (1990).
This is the fourth movie in which I have seen Clive Owen. The only other one that I have seen in recent years is Croupier (1998).
There are a few other actors in this movie that I have seen in other movies including Jodie Foster, Christopher Plummer, Willem Dafoe, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
I have seen at least a dozen movies that Spike lee has directed, going back to the late 1980s. I'm not sure why I didn't see this one when it was first released or (at the very least) prior to now.
