Le Groupe
or The Group
Lucienne is very happy to have found Kurt. She does everything she can to keep him alive. She focuses on him to the point that she doesn't notice when the other German soldier, the one Doctor Larcher was brought in to save, dies. She takes Kurt to her bedroom and hides him there. She does her best to change his bandages. Her father finds out about it. He warns her that it won't be good for her if anyone finds out that Kurt is German. She has a plan for how to deal with that.
The Germans who are occupying the school depart very early the next morning. No one sees them leave. The Resistance walks into town, led by De Kervern, Antoine, and Anselme. They run into the militia who are there to get the trucks that Schneider promised them. A gun fight erupts. De Kervern is wounded and taken prisoner. The militia take him to the school which they claim for their own. Doctor Larcher was getting ready to leave but they make him stick around and bandage up De Kervern.
The Resistance knows where the militia is holed up but more shooting erupts when they try approaching the school. A few more members of the Resistance are killed. Antoine goes in under a flag of truce. He talks with Blanchon who wants two buses and safe passage to the Swiss border. Antoine wants to see De Kervern to verify that he is still alive but Blanchon won't let him.
Blanchon is determined to keep De Kervern alive. De Kervern is unconscious. He needs a transfusion but they can't find anyone who knows that they have the right blood type, O.
The episode ends with Lucienne and Kurt together in bed together. Most of his bandages are off. They just had sex. She notices a tattoo on his arm. It looks like an O.
Thoughts
Marchetti, Müller, and Hortense are among the characters who don't appear in this episode.
I don't have a lot of patience for Lucienne's fantasy. I thought Kurt would be dead by the end of this episode. He seems to be in much better shape now than he was at the beginning of the episode but I think that the handwriting is on the wall. They will take the blood from Kurt and he will probably die.
This wasn't a bad episode but I wouldn't say it was a great one either. They are setting things up which will be paid off in future episodes. Some of it will probably be paid off in the next episode.
Are Germans (with the exception of Kurt) gone for good from Villeneuve? I'm not sure. It looks like they might be but that there will be plenty of fighting among French people in the last six episodes of the season.
