A team of Federation archaeologists are secretly studying the Mentakkens, a primitive Vulcan-like race, when they are discovered. Liko, one of the Mentakkens, is taken aboard the Enterprise after he is injured. He thinks the crew of the Enterprise are gods, especially Picard. The crew of the Enterprise attempts to cover up the discovery but they only succeed in making the situation worse.
The leader of the archaeological team urges Picard to violate the Prime Directive. Picard doesn't want to but in the end he doesn't see a way out of the situation without doing so.
Thoughts
Liko is played by Ray Wise. I know him best from Twin Peaks and the third season of Fargo. He was also in a few episodes of Mad Men where is played Ed Baxter, Ken Cosgrove's father-in-law. This is the only episode of this Star Trek series that he was in but he also showed up in one episode of Voyager.
I think I like the idea behind this episode more than I do the episode itself. It isn't a bad episode but I think it is less than great. What I like about it is that for once Picard finds himself in a situation where he has to violate the Prime Directive.
