True Detective 1.04

Who Goes There

Rust and Marty interrogate Charlie, Reggie Ledoux's old cell mate. They talked to Charlie once before; he's also Dora Lange's ex-husband. Dora was the murder victim from the first episode. Charlie helps them get a line on Tyrone Weems, who might know where to find Ledoux.

Lisa tries talking to Marty but he cuts her off and walks away. He goes home later only to find that Lisa was there. Maggie has packed up his stuff. Maggie and their daughters have gone to stay with Maggie's parents. Maggie has had enough. He wants to do something about it but his efforts prove to be ineffectual.

Rust and Marty's search for Weems isn't much more successful than their search for Ledoux. Marty finally turns up a lead after he tails Weems ex-girlfriend, whom he tried interrogating earlier in the episode. She unknowingly leads him to Weems. Marty interrogates Weems and learns from him, under duress, that Ledoux is working exclusively cooking meth for the Iron Crusaders, a biker gang.

Marty passes along to Rust what he learned from Weems. Rust has some past experience with the Iron Crusaders, from when he was working undercover. Rust pushes Marty to join him in an off the books, undercover operation. They head to Beaumont, TX looking for someone he knew in the Iron Crusaders.

Rust goes out solo and finds Ginger, his contact. He sells Ginger a story about having a deal through a Mexican gang, south of the border. Ginger wants something from Rust before he is willing to do any deals. Rust goes along with a snatch and grab operation in a poor part of town. Things go wrong but Rust gets Ginger out of there and links up with Marty just as the police arrive on the scene of the botched robbery.

Thoughts

There was some of the interviews in 2012, with the other two detectives, but not as much as in previous episodes. This episode was much more straightforward and less meandering than the previous episodes.

I'm still not in love with this show but I am more intrigued by this episode than I was with previous ones which just seemed too nebulous to me.
